A passenger on a holiday flight from Birmingham to Egypt allegedly deliberately started two fires mid-air.

Cabin crew were able to put out the flames, and police were waiting for the flight to land in Sharm-el-Sheik after the incident on 27 August.

The plane had to be put out of service, which left holidaymakers waiting to return to the UK on the aircraft delayed for 24 hours.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, one passenger on the flight said: "The plane was unserviceable because a man set fire to onboard toilets deliberately while also smoking and abusing the cabin crew, terrifying crew and passengers."

She said the crew deserved praise for the way they dealt with the 'idiot' who also "showed no remorse and verbally abused the passengers whose flight was cancelled".

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman told the Mirror: "We have launched an investigation after two small fires are believed to have been deliberately started on a Birmingham flight bound for Egypt."

According to Travel Mole, a Monarch Airlines spokeswoman also said: "The A321 aircraft, which was carrying 201 passengers and seven crew landed safely in Sharm El Sheikh where local police were in attendance.

"UK authorities have been notified and are dealing with the matter.

"As the alleged incident is the subject of a police investigation, we are not in a position to comment further."
