A naked couple have been found dead at the bottom of a fortress wall, leading police to believe they died in a "lovemaking accident".

The pair, both 31, were found on Thursday in a moat surrounding the Vauban Fort in the Chausey Archipelago, off France's north-western coast.

The Mirror reports that the man was found in the morning in a dried out part of the moat, and his partner was found later in the afternoon in water that was 1.5 metres deep.

According to thelocal.fr, a police source told the Le Figaro newspaper that the death was accidental and likely happened when the couple were "making love and something went wrong".

It is thought the couple were from Normandy and had been visiting the castle on a sightseeing trip.

The Daily Mail reports that the couple's belongings were found at the top of the castle ramparts 40ft above where they were found.

The paper adds that the granite fort was built in 1866 by Napoleon III as defence against English warships.
