A man has been killed after being struck by a rollercoaster while reportedly trying to retrieve his mobile phone.

The victim, who has not yet been identified, is believed to have entered a fenced-off restricted area when he was struck by the Raptor rollercoaster at Cedar Point amusement park in Ohio, USA, on Thursday.

Emergency crews and park safety teams were unable to save the man.

The park confirmed the death and said their "thoughts and prayers" were with the man's family.

A coroner report said that the victim is believed to have been searching for his phone when he was hit.

The Raptor ride travels at speeds of up to 57 mph, according to the Cedar Point website.

Local authorities are on the scene conducting an investigation.
