Where to go on holiday in October 2015

Updated

October is an excellent time to travel, when the sea is still warm in the Med, spring in the southern hemisphere brings blossoming flowers and one of the greatest wildlife spectacles takes place in Africa. Whether you're wondering where is hot and sunny in October, or want to know the best place to see autumn in all its glory, we've picked some of the best destinations around the world for an October holiday starting with a coastal beauty spot in Turkey...

Fethiye, Turkey

With temperatures still in the high twenties and the children back at school, October is a great time to experience the serenity of Fethiye - and visitors can enjoy low prices compared to holidays in July or August. Quieter and lesser-known to UK travellers than the likes of Bodrum, Marmaris and Antalya, Fethiye is on the beautiful Aegean coastline. Earlier this year, British Airways launched a direct flight between London Gatwick and Dalaman with four flights a week. The exclusive Hillside Beach Club is a stylish place to stay in Fethiye, set amid rugged countryside and surrounded by warm, clear waters. While at the retreat, you can explore the area's uninhabited islands, visit historical Lycian sites and get active by trekking or mountain biking. BA Holidays offers a seven-night package from £760 per person on a full board basis including flights and private transfers.

Patagonia, Argentina/Chile

As Patagonia's seasons are the reverse of the northern hemisphere, October is spring and a wonderful time to see the region. Expect a beautiful colour feast with the flora turning vivid as nature recovers following the winter months and take advantage of the mild climate which is ideal for trekking and exploration. You'll find less crowds too as most visitors don't flock there until November. World Expeditions offers an 11-day Patagonia Adventure tour in October from £2,490 per person. The trip is an introduction to the spectacular parks of Patagonia without the commitment to long walking days. It takes in the Perito Moreno Glacier, the Los Glaciares National Park, home to the famous 3,000m spires of Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy. A cruise from Puerto Natales via the Balmaceda Glacier into the world-famous Torres del Paine National Park is included, where you can explore the vast pampas and forests, home to herds of native South American Guanacos, on foot.

Tenerife, Spain

Swap the UK chill for guaranteed sunshine and pleasant temperatures of 23C in Tenerife this October. The island, which is just a four-hour flight from the UK in the Canaries, hosts two major sporting events. Teide Xtreme takes place in the south and includes three elements: 1.9km swimming, 96km cycling and 21km running. All three stages pass through popular places such as Los Cristianos, Adeje and the Teide National Park, where the cycling route reaches 2,200 metres above sea level. Later on in the month, the Tenerife Bluetrail, a long-distance mountain race takes place with four trails: Ultra (97km), Trail (66km), Media (20km) and an adapted trail (5km) for all types of people and abilities. Stay at the four-star adults-only Hotel Colon Guanahani from £116 per night for two adults sharing a colonial-style double room on a B&B basis.

Northumberland, UK

An October holiday in Northumberland offers a wide range of star gazing and planet watching activities that are a unique attraction to the county. In the International Dark Sky Park your eyes can feast on up to 2,000 stars at any one time - the furthest object you can see with your naked eye is the Andromeda Galaxy, a vast island of stars very similar to the Milky Way. Planets Nights at Kielder Observatory are planet observing events which invite you to spot Jupiter, Venus and Saturn with the help of telescopes. Northumberland also has many walking and hiking events during October as it is the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors. Stay Northumbria has cosy cottages to rent, such as Chatton Edge, a charming 18th century mill workers cottage with reclaimed flooring, an inglenook fireplace and an eclectic mix of antique and modern furniture.

Tanzania

October is the best time to visit the northern Serengeti in Tanzania when approximately one million wildebeest migrate, as well as hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelles. In October, wildebeest can be witnessed across the Nyamalumbwa and Bologonja plains as well as crossing the Mara River, a spectacular sight to see. A mobile camp is the best way to make sure you are in on the action. Serengeti Safari Camp is a luxury mobile camp which follows the wildlife, covering hundreds of miles each season and has exceptional guides. It has six open-plan Meru tents, with en-suite bathrooms including eco-flush toilets and safari-style bucket showers. Holidays cost from £3,583 per person for five nights' all-inclusive including flights from the UK.
