A major search for a missing diver off the coast of Swanage, Dorset has been called off.

The man failed to resurface during a trip in the English Channel.

ITV News reports that the Coastguard was called at 4.40pm on Sunday and dive vessel Emma J alerted authorities when only two of three drivers resurfaced.

The major air and sea search of more than 10 square nautical miles was suspended at 11pm on Sunday.

Coastguard commander Tristam Newey told the BBC: "This hasn't been an easy decision to make. This man is still missing and we appreciate the concern and worry this is causing his family and friends.

"This morning, in the absence of any further information, we have decided not to resume the search."

According to 96.4 Eagle, yachts in the Dorset area taking part in a race were asked to look out for the man in the early hours of Monday morning before the search was called off.

Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesman Tristam Newey said: "This hasn't been an easy decision to make. This man is still missing and we appreciate the concern and worry this is causing his family and friends."
