Two British men have drowned at popular beauty spot the Blue Lagoon in Comino, Malta.

The men, both believed to be 35, got into difficulties at around 3.30pm on Saturday.

ITV News reports that members of the Armed Forces of Malta immediately attended the scene and assisted one of the men who was taken to the nearby town of Imgarr by private boat. The other was airlifted to hospital.

Malta police later said the pair had died.

The men have not been named but the Birmingham Mail reports that one of the victims is a dentist from Small Heath.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman, said: "We can confirm the death of two British nationals in Malta."

Police are investigating their deaths.

In 2012, a British student drowned in Malta while attempting to swim through an underwater tunnel.

Marcus Hughes-Hallett, 20, family, was on a boat trip with his family, which included his parents David and Kristen, as well as brother Christian, and had been swimming in the Santa Marija Bay, off Comino.

The family were swimming near two caves in the bay, one "light" and one "dark". The two caves were connected by an underwater tunnel.

Captain Sebastian Custance had warned the family, from Leatherhead, Surrey, not to swim through the tunnel to reach the other cave, but to walk over the top.

Marcus got into difficulty and failed to reappear in the cave.

The family, along with other tourists, searched for him and his body was pulled from the water 20 minutes later.
