Teen rescued after being buried alive on Kent beach

A 13-year-old boy was rushed to hospital in an air ambulance after being buried alive in sand at Joss Bay, near Broadstairs, in Kent, this weekend.

The boy was reportedly completely covered in sand when a hole he had been digging collapsed on him.

He was enjoying a day at the beach with his family when the incident occurred.

He was dragged out of the hole by another beachgoer, who found he had stopped breathing and called emergency services.

According to Kent Online, he was taken to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford by air ambulance.

Lifeguards Dave Melmoth and Dave Bennett from Surf Life Saving gave the boy medical attention at the scene before paramedics arrived.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Mr Melmoth said: "He had become buried under the sand and when we got there he was not responding.

"We started to treat him and gave him oxygen. Then the ambulance, coastguard and air ambulance arrived and he started to respond to treatment."

It is believed the boy was conscious and talking when he boarded the air ambulance.

Mr Melmouth added: "It's the first big day of the summer season and people need to be aware of the dangers of tunnelling under the sand. It can be really dangerous as this incident shows and you really should not dig any lower than your waist."
