A 27-year-old man has died after being hit on the head by a tube train on April 10.

British Transport Police have reported that John Burgess, from Dulwich, died on April 13, just three days after the incident took place.

The commuter is thought to have been bending down to collect his back as he was hit by a Northern Line train while waiting on the platform at Stockwell station, the Mirror reports.

The tragic incident left the young man fighting for his life in hospital while eyewitnesses recalled the horrifying moment the accident took place.

According to the Guardian Raj Lucas said: "I was about midway on the platform and the tube was pulling in and suddenly I heard screams from the start of the platform.

"The people closer to the incident (who saw it) were visibly very distressed."

Isabelle Zonderland told the Evening Standard: "I was on the tube when it happened. He got hit only metres from our carriage.

Witnesses have also praised the work of the staff at the station at the time of the accident.

According to the Evening Standard, a Tube worker said after the incident: "The driver actually did very well to stop to the extent that he could when he did.

"It just happened as he bent over to pick up something, a lighter or a bag or something that we're not sure of and the train hit him. He didn't get dragged under which was lucky and he landed straight back on the platform."

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: "We can confirm that the man struck by a train at Stockwell London Underground station on Friday, 10 April, has since died in hospital.

"John Burgess, who was 27-years-old and from Dulwich, suffered serious injuries in the incident and passed away on Monday, 13 April.

"BTP officers are currently preparing a report for the coroner and the incident is not being treated as suspicious."

Police have also said that an inquest has been opened and adjourned.
