A British woman has drowned while on a luxury family holiday in Goa, India.

Grandmother Jane Whittington, 58, from Birley, Sheffield was with her partner Steve Cooper when she got into difficulty in the water, the Star reports.

The Times of India reports that the tragedy happened in the area of Sinquerim.

The couple were on a four-month holiday in the resort.

They had been on a boat trip before Jane and Steve decided to take a dip in the sea.

Jane got into difficulty and despite Steve's efforts, he was unable to save her.

According to the Star, Jane's family are going to return to Goa later this year to scatter her ashes.
