Bus driver makes 140-point turn after getting stuck in narrow street

A bus driver was left a little embarrassed after having to make a 140-point turn to get out of a narrow street in Norwich.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the driver ended up in the awkward position on Tuesday thanks to a mislabelled roadworks sign.

His boss at the Furst firm said the driver got trapped on Magdalen Street after he saw a road sign that said 'no access for any vehicles except buses'.

Work had started in the area on Monday to modify a junction in the city.

Chris Gosbell, owner of pawnbrokers Long's Pledge Centre helped the driver try and get out of the sticky spot after the bus hit the sign outside his shop.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: "I went out to try and help him to make sure he didn't reverse into the building. He said thanks for helping him out. I felt for him a bit."

Another passerby, Andy Manley, caught the manoeuvre on camera, and jokingly compared it to a scene from the Austin Powers film.

A spokesman for First told EDP24 that drivers would be reminded about diversions in the area, saying: "We can confirm that one of our buses drove along Magdalen Street on Tuesday 27 January as the diversion signs were placed to read 'No access for any vehicles except buses'.

"We issue staff notices to all of our drivers in advance of roadworks, advising them of the diversion and the diversion route. However, in instances like this, our drivers obey signage on the roads.

"We will remind our drivers about the diversions and apologise for any inconvenience caused."
