Police warn drivers after icy road crashes

Humberside Police is warning motorists to take care on the roads after they were called to more than 40 accidents on Saturday due to icy weather.

Hull Daily Mail reports that emergency services were called to a series of collisions, including a two-vehicle crash in North Frodingham and an accident which saw a car end up in a ditch near Market Weighton, as temperatures dropped in East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire.

A spokesman for Humberside Police told the newspaper: "There have been 40 logs created for road traffic collisions.

"Temperatures across the force area are now starting to drop. People are advised to consider if their journey is necessary."

The BBC reports that one person was taken to hospital by air ambulance following a crash on a motorway near Scunthorpe.

It caused the westbound carriageway of the M180 to be closed for several hours.

Meanwhile, weather forecasters have said temperatures will rise for parts of Britain next week.

Leon Brown at The Weather Channel tells AOL Travel: "Next week will start cold with frosts, but will be mainly dry. It will be mild, wet and windy by mid-week before it turns colder again with wintry showers over the North. West then northwest gales are likely again over the North on Thursday and Friday and blizzards for the Scottish Highlands."

Mr Brown adds: "The unsettled and often windy weather pattern continues to Christmas with colder weather for the North and hill snow, while less cold over the South."
