'Doting dad' dies in hotel room after stag do drugs binge

A man described as a "doting dad" as died in a hotel room after an all-night drugs binge on a stag do.

Austen Howells, 40, was found lying on the floor of a friend's hotel room at Bredbury Hall in Stockport after taking a lethal mix of cocaine, ephedrine, amphetamines and ecstasy-style drug AMT, reports Wales Online.

The dad of two had travelled with the 40-strong stag party from South Wales to Greater Manchester.

He arrived back at the hotel after a night out at around 5am with two friends, James Donovan and Wjike Uzoigwe, who said he was in a "bad place" and left him lying on a bed.

When they returned a short time later, he was not breathing.

He was found dead at the scene at 3pm on Saturday 9 August.

The groom-to-be Ben Davies said Mr Howells was "homely" in the week but led a different life at the weekends, indulging in cocaine-taking.

He had played rugby semi-professionally with Bridgend Ravens and was coaching with Maesteg at the time of his death.

Mr Howells' wife Alexandra described him as a "doting dad" and a fitness fanatic who loved coaching young rugby players.

Recording a verdict of a drug-related death, area coroner for Manchester South Joanne Kearsley called his death a "waste of life"

According to the Manchester Evening News, she said: "It is particularly tragic when someone who was in many ways clearly a talented, dedicated and respected individual, who spent time developing youth and sporting talent, dies in such a needless way.

"He was a man who lived an almost paradoxical life. He was a healthy-living, sporting and family man, but someone who had an unhealthy and long-standing drug habit.

"He had everything to live for and was clearly very much respected within the community. It was a waste of a talent and I hope that message is heard loud and clear."
