A couple from Aberdeenshire returned from their holiday in Tenerife to find they had won the lottery.

George and Sandra Kinghorn were driving back from the airport when they read the email telling them they had won £1 million and a private island holiday in the EuroMillions Mega Friday draw.

Evening Express reports that 60-year-old George thought they had just won a few pounds like he had in the past and said: "I never once thought I'd scooped the jackpot. I didn't open it and when I got home I put my phone on charge and went to bed.

"I only realised how much I'd won when I went online at 6.30pm the following night to put my lines on for the Saturday draw.

"I actually turned the computer off and back on again – I was sure it was a mistake."

According to Press and Journal, the couple haven't decided how to spend their money.

George said: "We have just been taking it all in. I like to play golf on my time off so I think I will take a few friends away for a week's golfing."

In 2012, a couple who won £148 million on the lottery celebrated by going on holiday - with budget airline easyJet.

Adrian and Gillian Bayford won enough money to charter a private jet to a five-star destination anywhere in the world - but instead they opted to pay an estimated £130 for flights with the low-cost airline.

The down-to-earth couple, from Haverhill in Suffolk, treated their children aged six and four to the break too.
