Canaries beat Caribbean for winter sun, says new survey
Britons looking for a cheap holiday in the sun this winter should head for the Canary Islands rather than the Caribbean for the best-value winter sun family breaks, according to a TripAdvisor survey.
The Canary islands of Fuerteventura (pictured above) and Tenerife have the cheapest in-resort costs while Caribbean hotspots Turks and Caicos and Barbados are the priciest places.
The survey was based on costs for a family of four on a week-long trip to 29 destinations this winter and included the cost of rented accommodation, car hire, one dinner out and basic groceries.
While these items cost as little as £525 in Fuerteventura and just £574 in Tenerife, they were as much as £3,952 in Turks and Caicos (pictured below) and £2,095 in Barbados.
Other good-value destinations included Goa in India (where the costs were £606), Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt (£608), Marrakech in Morocco (£633) and Lanzarote in the Canaries (£645).
Among the most-expensive winter sun resorts were Cayman Islands in the Caribbean (£1,836), Dubai (£1,753) and Jamaica (£1,641).
For the price of one week in a holiday rental in Turks and Caicos, a family of four could have over 10 weeks in Goa with a holiday rental there costing just £352 per week.
Tenerife was the cheapest destination to get around as the cost to hire a car for a family of four for one week comes in at £89 - around four times less than in St Lucia in the Caribbean where the cost was £351.
Goa was the cheapest place to eat out, with a dinner for four costing just £21, compared with as much as £86 in the Cayman Islands. Dubai was priciest for drinks with two beers costing £22 and two soft drinks £6.
A loaf of bread in Mauritius was just 29p while in Turks and Caicos it was £3.
