Three passengers had to be evacuated from a bus in Guildford, Surrey, on Wednesday afternoon after the vehicle became engulfed in flames.

A major road was closed in Merrow after fire crews were called to the scene on the A246 EpsomRoad at 12pm on Wednesday.

Watch commander Steve Bulwell, from Guildford Fire Station's red watch, said it is thought the fire was caused by an electrical fault.

Speaking to Get Surrey, he said: "The back of the bus caught light and it was really going for it. The bus driver did the right thing and pulled over and evacuated the vehicle.

"We took a breathing apparatus and hose reel and cut a lot of the back away to see if it had spread.

"Luckily no one was hurt."

According to Eagle Radio, two fire engines were sent to deal with the situation.

The bus was moved into a lay-by while it waited to be removed.

Traffic was affected between Guildford and Leatherhead, but nobody was hurt in the incident.

The news comes as two teen were this week jailed for two years for setting a double decker bus on fire in Birmingham - while it had passengers on board.

The bus was engulfed in flames and eight terrified passengers, as well as the driver, had to flee the vehicle.

Witnesses said the boys started a fire before getting off the bus 'laughing' as they did so, without warning other passengers.
