A tornado-like waterspout has been spotted off Britain's south coast on Tuesday as the UK was hit by thunderstorms and gale-force winds.

The waterspout was filmed a couple of miles off the coast of Plymouth, Devon, by Jim Andrews from his home in Portwrinkle.

Speaking to the Metro, Mr Andrews said: "I've lived here all my life and I've never seen anything like it.

"It was about two miles off shore so it must have been hundreds of feet high. It reached down from the cloud base to the sea surface and you can see the enormous spray it threw up. It really was incredible."

Meanwhile, the unsettled weather is set to continue. Leon Brown, meteorologist at The Weather Channel UK told Aol Travel: "There will be low pressure sitting just to the north west of the UK for the rest of the week keeping the weather unstable with showers.

"A persistent area of moderate to heavy rain across N Scotland today, tonight and tomorrow morning will give more than 30mm of rainfall and perhaps 60mm over the highlands so an increasing flood risk across this region by tonight and tomorrow.

"There will be bands of showers and longer spells of rain swinging north east across the UK on Wednesday with a Rrsk of hail and thunder around southern and western coasts.

"Very gradually the showers will become less frequent later this week, so by Thursday most showers will be over Wales, north west England and south west Scotland with clearer weather for the south.

"Another band of scattered showers moves east on Friday, but some bright sunshine too.

"Temperatures by day are near the early October normal, but it will be chilly at night where skies clear."

And looking forward to the weekend? Leon added: "This weekend most showers will be near western and southern coasts. As winds fall, light nights will become cold and by Sunday morning many areas will start foggy.

"Expect ground frosts for central and northern Britain and local air frosts in Scotland.

Leon said there could be more unsettled weather ahead. "Next week looks drier to start then more unsettled, wetter and windier weather arriving from the west from the middle of the week. Temperatures will be cool at first then lifting later in the week."
