Uk weather: October to kick off with warm temperatures

Britain this weekend enjoyed temperatures hotter than some parts of Greece - and there's more balmy weather to come in the first week of October.

According to The Sun, temperatures hit 24C on Sunday, which was hotter than the island of Crete, which hit 23C.

The Daily Mail reports that September is set to be the driest in 50 years, with the driest ever recorded being 1959 when just 23.8m fell.

Only 22.5mm of rain was recorded up until 2 September, against a monthly average of 96mm.

And, according to the paper, some forecaster are predicting 30 more rain-free days. However, others are not so positive.

According to Leon Brown, meteorologist at The Weather Channel, the UK will enjoy a pleasant start to October before temps take a drop and some rain hits.

He told Aol Travel: "There will be a transition from the very dry and warm weather we have had throughout September to wetter and cooler weather as we head to the second week in October. The jet stream will become stronger and move further south over the Atlantic.

"This week the north west will become quite a bit cooler and windier with near normal precipitation for north west Scotland, while southern Britain will remain drier and still warm until Friday.

"From next weekend everywhere will be wetter and unsettled with 100 to 150% of normal precipitation likely next week. Temperatures will also drop a little below normal before lifting back again.

"This week a weak cold front will move southwards on Wednesday with quite a drop in temperatures over the northern half of the UK, but the front petering out as it reaches the south.

"A deeper area of low pressure will pass the north on Thursday to Friday with a much more active cold front moving southwards. It will become windy on Thursday night in the north with 50 to 60mph gusts across exposed parts of Scotland.

"A band of quite heavy rain on a cold front will move south across Scotland during Friday to northern England and Wales by evening, reaching the Midlands then the south east early on Saturday.

"Next weekend looks unsettled and cool with showers and some longer spells of rain."
