A couple has received a £2,000 payout after their holiday in Turkey turned into a nightmare.

John and Tracey Erskine, from Warrington, said they had expected a relaxing and indulgent holiday when they treated themselves to the getaway back in September 2012.

But it quickly turned into a holiday from hell when the grandparents were verbally abused by "loutish yobs" in an apartment just 15ft away. They even saw one man performing a sex act on himself on the balcony, reports the Daily Mail.

The Voyage Torba all-inclusive resort was also dirty and mouldy, with leaking toilets, they said.

They booked the getaway for John's 50th birthday after seeing it in the Thomas Cook Style Collection brochure, which claimed to showcase its "top four-star and above hotels".

The couple moved rooms twice but felt that not enough was done to deliver on Thomas Cook's promise of an outstanding holiday.

They started legal proceedings when they got home and were finally awarded the payout this week at Warrington County Court.

Mr Erskine said he was relieved it was over, and that the court case was not about the money, it was "the principle of the matter".

Mrs Erskine said: "We were looking for a relaxing break where we could some spend time together.

"We wanted peace and serenity and that's what we thought we were going to get."

A Thomas Cook spokesman told the Daily Mail: "This incident was very much an isolated occurrence and we are confident that those due to stay at the property will enjoy the quality holiday experience they would come to expect from Thomas Cook."

Back in February, a couple from Edinburgh received a £13k payout after developing a severe sickness bug on another holiday from hell in Turkey.

Scott and Katrine Ferguson both fell ill while staying at the Holiday Village resort in Sarigerme, Turkey, which they visited in 2009 with their children, Thomas and Taylor, then eight and five.

They paid £3000 for their holiday, and received £6,400 each in compensation after they both fell ill.

The hotel had received hundreds of complaints about guests falling ill there, and even featured on BBC's Watchdog.

Holidaymakers told of horror stories, like poo in the swimming pool and undercooked food.
