A British volunteer was stabbed in a late night attack in Marrakech, Morocco.

Naomie Greenslade, 22, was walking to her accommodation with a group of friends at around midnight on Wednesday when she was attacked by a man armed with a machete.

The dental nurse, from Bargoed, near Caerphilly in Wales, was in the city for a week of volunteering with orphans.

Speaking to WalesOnline, Naomie said she was stabbed after refusing to hand over her bum bag which contained just 13p.

She said: "We were literally two minutes away from the house where we were staying. We were walking at normal speed and chatting. We were not intoxicated. There were three guys with us and you'd think you are safe when you have men with you but these guys out here don't care."

The man pointed the butcher's knife at her chest but Naomie refused to give him her bag and jumped back as he tried to stab her.

But he slashed her thigh, leaving a gaping wound in her leg.

Naomie was taken to hospital where she needed more than a dozen stitches.

According to the BBC, a local man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Brave Naomie refused to return home after the attack and says she will stay to complete her week of volunteering.

But she warned others to do their research before travelling to Marrakech.

She said: "If women think they will be protected by their partners they are not. I was in a group of ten, with three men, and this still happened."
