Zookeeper attacked by tiger in Australia

A zookeeper has been rushed to hospital after he was attacked by a tiger at Australia Zoo.

The 42-year-old keeper was bitten on the leg at the Queensland zoo by a 10-year-old Sumatran tiger named Juma.

An zoo spokeswoman said the incident occurred during a routine activity, as the keeper was moving Juma from one enclosure to another, reports the Daily Mail.

'First aid protocol was followed, the same as Australia Zoo renders all staff, and the keeper is going to be fine,' she added.

'Juma the tiger is fine as well.'

The zoo tweeted about the incident saying "1 of our tigers tagged a keeper on leg today. Keeper has tooth puncture wound but is fine. Juma the tiger's good too."

The zookeeper was taken to Nambour Hospital where he was treated for a puncture wound.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said he was in a stable condition.

This is the second tiger attack at the zoo in just eight months.

In November, a 114kg Bengal tiger attacked his handler Dave Styles and bit him on the neck and shoulder during a tiger show in front of horrified onlookers.

Mr Styles has only recently returned to the tiger enclosure after several months off work, reports the Courier Mail.
