A 32-year-old woman was raped in a car park near South Shields' seafront in Tyne and Wear on Friday night.

Police were called to Dunes car park on Sea Road after the victim was attacked after 10pm, the BBC reports.

Locals were shocked at hearing of the attack in the usually busy seaside resort.

Labour Councillor Eileen Leask, who represents the Horsley Hill area, told Chronicle Live: "It is very shocking.

"I am sure the police are doing everything they can about it. No one wants this kind of thing happening."

Northumbria Police said: "Extra patrols are in the area to provide reassurance to the local community."
