Couple arrested for 'having sex' in sea in front of horrified beachgoers

A couple have been arrested for allegedly having sex in the sea in front of shocked onlookers in New Jersey.

A Philadelphia couple reportedly engaged in sexual acts in Sea Isle City at around 4pm on Sunday.

According to the Daily Mail, witnesses said the pair waded out into thigh-high water before having sex in front of families with children on the beach.

Some onlookers managed to take pictures of the incident, and promptly shared them on social media.

One man uploaded a picture of the pair being arrested and wrote: "Sex in the ocean? Not on Sea Isle's watch #fatuglyanddrunk."

According to nbc40.net, Sea Isle City police arrested a 27-year-old male and a 23-year-old female, who were both charged with lewdness and later released on summonses.

Back in May 2013, a couple were arrested after members of the public spotted them having sex on a beach in Florida.

Tanya Wheeler, 34, and Ward Powell, 53, had started off the with an early-morning skinny dip and had moved onto the beach in Manapalan, Palm Beach County.

According to the Sun Sentinel, a person then called the police to report that two "suspicious" people were having sex on the beach.

Two officers found the pair still naked, and according to the Daily Mail, Powell apologised and said he "knew better but one thing led to another".
