Billy Connelly sells tartan-clad Candagraig house in Scotland for £3m

Billy Connolly has sold his mansion in Scotland for a cool £3 million.

The comedian and his wife Pamela Stephenson bought Candacraig House in Strathdon back in 1998 for £590,000.

The couple are said to love the home in Aberdeenshire, but are now based in New York and have been spending less and less time at the 12-bedroom property.

However, it is believed they have kept a cottage in the mansion's 14 acres as a holiday home.

Billy and Pamela bought the stunning 17th century property from The Body Shop founder Anita Roddick. But the new owner wishes to remain anonymous.

Billy, also known as the Big Yin, is very involved in the local area. Jennifer Stewart, secretary of the Lonach Highland and Friendly Society, told the Daily Record: "He will continue to be a supporter as he is an honorary member of the Lonach Society.

"He will continue to provide a trophy for the piping competition so nothing's going to change from our point of view. He's been great for the area."

Billy has hosted many famous guests at the house, including Robin Williams, Steve Martin and Ewan McGregor.

A sales brochure on the house described it as as "a traditional Scots baronial mansion house built of harled stone under a slate roof with pepper pot turrets and steep pitched roofs."

And Billy decked it out in traditional decor, including a huge dining room with green tartan walls covered in stags antlers, and including a host of red tartan dining chairs.

A source told the Herald Scotland: "It is a wrench for the Connollys to let go of the property, but they are now permanently based in New York and have been spending less and less time at Candacraig House.

"Billy and Pamela have often said he is at his happiest when he is there. It is sad for them but they are content it is going to good hands."
