Lorry smashes into overpass on New York highway: Video

Updated

A truck was left shattered on the side of the road after it crashed into an overpass on a New York highway.

The driver misjudged the height of an arched bridge and smashed into it, tearing open the container and spreading debris across two lanes.

The crash followed a number of close calls with other brdiges along the busy highway, and the dramatic event was all captured on camera by a motorist.

The truck was left crumpled at the side of the Meadowbrook Parkway in Long Island, New York and two lanes of traffic were closed for almost three hours while the debris was cleared up, reports the Mirror.

New York state law bans trucks from driving on parkways, which are multi-lane roads similar to freeways, but which frequently have low, stone-arch overpasses.
