Philadelphia Zoo has created a tiger trail for its big cats which allows them to leave their usual habitats and roam around freely.

Tigers can now wander around the zoo in enclosed trails - nicknamed 'catwalks' - which go overhead of the zoo's visitor pathways and along the ground beside the lake.

The trails give the animals a much wider visual range than they had before.

The zoo has already opened similar trails for orang-utans and small primates in the past, reports the BBC.

The trail takes the cats 400ft for now but the zoo plans on further expanding the trails so the animals can explore the entire zoo.

According to the Daily Mail, the project cost $2.3 million and was paid for with state and private funds.

Although some animals were apprehensive at first, the zoo's CEO Andrew Bake tells BBC Radio 5, "Once they've gotten past the newness of it, all the animals who have had the opportunity have used it extensively."
