A romantic city break involving an extra two hours and 24 minutes in bed each day, a total of two hours and 45 minutes of shopping, and eight hours and six minutes' wining and dining has been revealed as the perfect formula for a lovers getaway.

A new study, by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, found that the break can strengthen a relationship, after one in five British couples admitted it took a romantic bank holiday weekend away to save theirs.

The survey, of 2,000 Britons, found that five hours and 19 minutes exploring the city on foot also provides the perfect compromise between men and women's differing interests.

As for when a couple should take their first weekend away, it was found to be 88 days into a relationship - although men would generally be happier to go sooner.

One in 20 Brits (five per cent) said they would be happy to go away with someone they have only known for 24 hours.

Giving hope to those who feel their relationship may be on the wane, two thirds of lovers (67 per cent) insisted a weekend away strengthened their bond.

And 20 per cent go as far as to say that being whisked away prevented them breaking up.

Relationship expert at The Spark, Marion Laird said: "It happens in the best of relationships.

"The flames of passion and romance lose momentum and couples get caught up in the routine and daily grind of work, bills and children.

"A weekend break, whether long haul or within the UK, is the perfect solution to get that all-important time away, switch-off and make time for yourself and your loved one."

The study found the ideal romantic weekend also involves £260 worth of spending money and a stay at a four-star boutique hotel. However, excessive travelling can spoil the mood - it should take no more than four hours and 18 minutes to get there.

Minty Woolgar, of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: "Everyone needs to be able to switch-off from time to time, rekindle relationships and do the things that you love to do.

"Whatever your reason for booking a break, the upcoming bank holidays are the perfect excuse to get away and take full advantage of the extra day off."

If you're looking for a last-minute break in the UK, Glasgow offers magical architecture, green spaces and enchanting rendezvous spots. Glasgow City Marketing Bureau has created the 'Romantic's Guide to Glasgow' which includes the city's most romantic attractions, such as the Zen Garden, Glasgow Botanic Gardens and Rogano Oyster.
