An American senator was left a little red-faced (but also very relieved) after narrowly dodging an oncoming train during a press conference about rail safety.

Richard Blumenthal was standing on the platform with an easel demonstrating the improvements made to a dangerous rail line in the city of Milford, Connecticut, when train thundered through, nearly knocking it - and him - over, reports the Independent.

Just as the Amtrak train sped past, Milford mayor Ben Blake, said: "Safety, as you know, is paramount."

The Metro reports that Senator Blumenthal had been campaigning for greater accountability from Metro-North railway after it was revealed it had paid £328,904 in fines in the last decade.

Perhaps he might take a little more notice of the yellow safety line next time.
