One US town is literally going to the dogs - after electing a bloodhound as its new Mayor.

Voters in Divide, Colorado, chose Pa Kettle to 'run' the small mountain town in the absence of a real (human) mayor.

The unofficial title benefits the local Teller County Regional Animal Shelter. Each vote in the online race helped to raise one dollar for the no-kill facility.

And Pa landed 2,387 votes, to beat out 10 other candidates, including a hedgehog, a cat and a donkey.

Janey Bennett, Pa's owner, said the search and rescue dog deserved the title. "He is the only candidate that has a real job," she told a local newspaper, according to Splash News.

"And he is the only candidate that has a last name and a verifiable birth certificate, which I don't think the others do."

Divide's mayoral race takes place every two years. This year it raised $12,091 USD for the shelter.

Pa will be inaugurated on April 19.
