Photographer Oli Haukur Myrdai documents the Northern Lights radiating over the Iceland sky in this stunning time-lapse video taken during the winter of 2014.

The mesmerizing video, entitled "This is Iceland" captures the breathtaking beauty of the Northern Lights.

The talented photographer captures the coloured lights illuminating the dark, starry sky and highlighting the natural beauty of the Icelandic landscape.

The amazing video was uploaded to Vimeo after it was reported that a record number of Britons had visited Iceland in January hoping to experience the beauty of the aurora activity for themselves.

According to Promote Iceland, 16,576 British holidaymakers arrived in January, up from 10,031 in January 2013 – a year-on-year increase of more than 65 per cent.

NASA predicted last summer that travellers heading north would have an excellent chance of witnessing the Northern Lights, reports the Telegraph.

Georgia Hancock from Discover the World said that Britons who did visit Iceland in January were unlikely to have returned home disappointed, with Northern Lights sightings reportedly "superb".

She added that the solar maximum would continue next winter, for those unable to make it this year.

Dublin-based photographer Felipe Pitta also travelled North to the city of Tromsø, Norway to capture the breathtaking Aurora Borealis in February.

"I've wanted to photograph the Northern Lights for many years and Tromsø is probably the best place in the world to do it from," the Brazilian born photographer told breakingnews.ie.

Since returning to Ireland, Felipe has edited together over 1,100 images to make a beautiful time lapse video.

"I tried to reproduce the Northern Lights here with their real speed, as close as possible of how I've seen it," says Pitta.
