Britain's best destinations 2014 revealed - and London is top

TripAdvisor has just announced its list of Britain's best tourist destinations, with some surprising results.

Although London came top for travellers the list has caused some to disagree rather strongly, particularly as it includes the town of Torquay (pictured), which came third, beating destinations such as York and Llandudno. Birmingham also makes the top ten.

The Telegraph says that the results read "more like a fantasy football league than a list of the UK's finest destinations". Writer Brian Jackman calls Torquay a "sprawling metropolis": "the self-styled Queen of the English Riviera has become a raddled old monarch, expanding around Torbay like a giant octopus whose gridlocked tentacles now reach out to envelop Babbacombe, Paignton and Brixham".

TripAdvisor spokesman James Kay told the Evening Standard: "These awards are based on millions of reviews and ratings by those that really matter - travellers themselves.

"There is no doubt the birth of the royal baby helped keep the eyes of the world on London in 2013, but the capital's continued appeal among travellers around the world surpasses any one event."

The rankings of the Travellers' Choice Awards for Destinations are based on the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, attractions and restaurants.
