Cruise ship worker filmed 'throwing rubbish bags into ocean' (video)

The moment a cruise ship worker appeared to dump rubbish straight into the sea was allegedly captured on camera by a former crewman.

The video was reportedly filmed on liner MSC Magnificia, which was sailing of the coast of Brazil at the time.

On his website, maritime lawyer Jim Walker, who says he was sent the video footage by the former employee, said the bags were likely filled with "cardboard, plastic and debris" that cruise ships are prohibited from discarding into the sea under the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).

MSC Cruises told The Huffington Post that the videos recorded were of the same incident.

An MSC Cruises statement read that a "full investigation is being conducted into the issue" and that "new stringent procedures have been enacted ... to further discipline crew members for breaches of the company's stringent anti-pollution policies."

"In light of the on-going investigation MSC Cruises is not in a position to divulge details of the case.

"MSC Cruises is fully collaborating with the Brazilian authorities in order to shed light on the responsibilities and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future."

According to the Daily Mail, a similar incident was reported in December of what appeared to be illegal dumping off cruise ship Guardians of the Seas.
