Where to go on holiday in April

Updated

Just like spring flowers, holiday options blossom in April, especially across Britain and Europe. This is the beginning of the warm and sunny holiday season. As the days lengthen and kinder weather sets in, you'll feel more inclined to embrace the great outdoors, whether you fancy pounding the pavement on a city break or putting on your walking boots - or bike clips - for a rural romp.

Easter marks the moment when we turn our dreams of warmer climes into action, though the festival is running late this year, with most schools breaking up on 20 April. If you want to save your pennies - and avoid the crowds - you'd better get away before that date.

You may still feel it's a little cold to put your toe in the sea in Europe, but the resorts are beginning to open around the Med and Atlantic coasts - better still, go mid-haul to destinations such as Cyprus for some heat.

Good long-haul choices this month include the Indian Ocean and the Caribbean for guaranteed sun, while Australia's autumn is a great time to go Down Under.

For something different, why not head to Japan to see the fabulous displays of cherry blossom that decorate the streets and parks at this time of year? And, of course, it's just about your last chance to head for the ski slopes in Europe and North America.
