Six children drown while ice skating on frozen river
Six children have died after ice skating on a frozen river in northern China and falling into the water.
The youngsters were aged between five and 11 and fell through the ice near a village in Pingyao county, AP reports.
Rescue workers were sent to the scene after residents alerted police but they were unable to save the children.
Sky News reports that their bodies were pulled from the water around an hour later after rescue workers arrived.
Rubber tubes and ropes were used in the rescue operation.
An investigation has been launched.
