An unruly passenger forced a London-bound flight from Chicago to make an emergency landing in Canada when he "refused to listen to the flight crew's instructions".

The American Airlines plane landed in Newfoundland after the 35-year-old intoxicated passenger argued with other travellers, cursed and refused to sit in this seat, the Daily Mail reports.

The man also became violent and damaged a plane seat.

According to The Independent, the man was removed from the flight and handed over to authorities before the flight continued.

There were 187 passengers on the Boeing 777 which landed in London on Sunday.
