It is believed a 59-year-old British tourist has been killed in an avalanche while skiing in India.

According to the Times of India, the tourist was skiing with two others at an altitude of over 10,000 in Kashmir's resort town of Gulmarg.

A police officer said: "He was trapped under the sudden avalanche while the other two escaped with minor injuries."

The officer told the paper that the skier's body had been retrieved and the British High Commission in New Delhi was informed for the body to be sent home.

It had originally been reported that the victim was a Swiss national who had gone skiing with five others, ignoring bad weather warnings.

Gulmarg is a Himalayan ski resort that is famous for its off-piste areas. It has received some of its heaviest snowfall in a decade this week, making it prone to avalanches and landslides.
