A woman was killed in Boston when a drawbridge she was crossing started to open.

Aura Garcia, 46, was crushed to death between sections of the drawbridge over the Chelsea River.

According to CBS Local, the operator of the bridge was not aware that Garcia was crossing and raised it for a boat to pass.

When he heard her scream, he lowered the bridge but Garcia became trapped in between the plates.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speaking to the Boston Globe, her daughter Nancy Garcia said: "I'm never going to see my mother again. I just want to know what truly happened. If there are cameras, I want to know what's on them. It's sad that this happened. And the year has just started."
