A new island could be created in the Canaries after hundreds of earthquakes and trembles in the Atlantic Ocean suggest an underwater volcano could erupt.

If the volcano, near the island of El Hierro, were to erupt it would mean that the 10,000 residents would need to be evacuated, the Daily Mail reports.

According to NBC News, residents in El Hierro said there was strong shaking on Friday.

Parts of the island have swelled nearly three inches in the past week.

Over 550 earthquakes were reported and monitored between Monday and Wednesday.
