A 27-year-old Irish skier has died in the Swiss Alps after being buried by an avalanche.

Police from the Uri province discovered the man's body on Friday morning after he was reported missing by his girlfriend.

Alpine Rescue Switzerland told the Irish Independent that he was swept more than 500 metres by the avalanche.

His body was found near the town of Realp in central Switzerland.

Authorities are investigating whether the avalanche was caused by falling ice.

According to RTE, the man reportedly lived in Zurich.

A second skier was killed in an avalanche in the Piz Nair area overlooking luxury resort St Moritz on Friday.
