Six people have died and one person is in hospital after their fishing boat capsized in rough seas off the west coast of Portugal.

Officials say the 37-year-old man who survived was hospitalised with hypothermia, AP reports.

He swam to the beach on Costa de Caparica, nine miles west of Lisbon, on Saturday.

The group were leisure fishing on a fibreglass boat equipped for the activity.

Sky News reports that investigators examined the boat and found a large hole in its hull.
