A 21-year-old woman who was accompanying schoolchildren on a ski trip plunged 120ft into freezing water from a P&O ferry.

Passengers, including the children, watched as the British woman jumped into the water in Calais harbour on the trip back to Dover.

The Mirror reports that the woman spent six minutes in the icy water before being rescued by British sailors on the ferry and transferred to hospital.

A French police officer told the Mirror: "She suffered a leg injury as she hit the water, but is otherwise unscathed. Friends who saw what happened suggested she had wanted to commit suicide.

"She was part of a party which had just got back from a skiing holiday in the Alps."

According to Metro, the woman, who has not been named, is believed to be in a "bad way" and witnesses said the fall was not an accident.
