Holiday rentals could cost hundreds more for Brits visiting Europe

New laws in France and Spain could see holiday rentals under threat as Britons who own homes abroad could be banned from renting them to tourists.

According to eTurboNews, this could cost British holidaymakers hundreds more for their breaks as they will no longer be able to pay cheaper rates for apartments and villas direct from the owners but would have to stay in accommodation operated by major companies.

French parliament is expected to vote on the legislation this week, while Spain will debate the rules next May.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Germany is also considering the rules for Berlin, which could come into effect in two years' time.

Ryan Levitt, of holiday rental website housetrip.com, told the Daily Mail: "This law is closing the door to working and middle-class families who want to book a break to Spain at an affordable price.

"Instead of being able to share a whole house with friends, you face being stuck with your kids in a cramped hotel room."

Up to 12 million Brits visit Spain each year and a quarter stay in private lettings.
