So, we know ski holidays don't come cheap and we won't try to fool you into thinking it's easy to go skiing on a shoestring, but if you love nothing better than hitting the open slopes there are a few ways you can avoid breaking the bank.

Firstly, forget the glamorous French ski resorts of Courchevel, Meribel and Val d'Isere. And don't even peek at Switzerland's St Moritz or Verbier. Even if you find affordable travel with a budget airline, you'll still have to contend with the high resort prices.

For the best value and an affordable ski trip, you can't beat Bulgaria. Consistently offering good quality accommodation and low resort costs, it's the ideal place to take the whole family.

Consider the tax-free resorts of Andorra and Livigno, with their magnificent mountains, spectacular scenery and great ski schools.

And you may not have to dig as deep as you thought to cross the Atlantic as some ski resorts in North America are even cheaper than Europe's best value spots.
