Police believe the body of a passenger who fell from a private plane into the sea on Thursday is that of Florida man Gerardo Nales.

Nales and a pilot boarded the single-engine plane and flew over waters off South Florida.

As the plane was 2,000ft in the air, the door opened and Nales fell out into the sea.

A body was found three days later on Saturday in an area of mangroves.

According to The Guardian, Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said: "Even though we presume that the body found is that of Gerardo Nales, investigators are pending 'official identification' from the Medical Examiner's Office."

The pilot's identity or the intended destination of the plane has not been released.

Speaking to the Miami Herald, police spokesman Javier Baez said: "We have yet to determine if a crime was committed."
