A man has been hit and killed by a train at Gatwick Airport.

British Transport Police (BTP) were called to platform 5 at Gatwick Airport station at around 8.19pm on Wednesday after the man was hit by the 19.06 London Victoria to Brighton service.

A BTP spokesman told the Crawley Observer: "Officers from BTP and Sussex Constabulary attended the incident, which was reported to BTP at 8.19pm and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

"Medics from South East Coast Ambulance Service also attended and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

"The train involved was the 1906 London Victoria to Brighton service and the line was handed back to Network Rail at 9.40pm."

According to the Surrey Mirror, the spokesman added: "The man is believed to be in his mid-40s and from Horley."

This Is Sussex reports the incident caused widespread delays with a number of trains being cancelled.
