A middle-aged man's body has been found on the banks of the River Wear at Sunderland's Fish Quay.

The body was discovered by a member of the public close to Panns Bank University Accommodation on Saturday morning.

ITV News reports that police and RNLI attended the scene and the body was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Enquiries are taking place to identify the man and cause of death.

Speaking to Sky Tyne and Wear, an RNLI spokesperson said: "Northumbria Police received a 999 call from a member of the public reporting the sighting of a person lying on mud-banks at the edge of the River Wear close to Panns Bank University Accommodation.

"The body of a middle aged male was recovered from the mud-bank.

"The body was transferred to the lifeboat station at Sunderland Marina where it was handed over to Northumbria Police officers and paramedics."
