Yorkshire wildlife park to rescue polar bear from Mexico zoo

A wildlife Park in Yorkshire is planning to rescue a polar bear from a zoo in Mexico because of concerns that the animal is suffering.

Yupi the polar bear is 22 years old and is currently being kept at Parque Zoologico Benito Juarez, 5,500 miles away.

A Save Yupi Campaign has recently highlighted the plight of the animal and is encouraging people to support the push to rescue her.

Speaking to the BBC, a Yorkshire Wildlife Park spokesperson said: "Her concrete enclosure has little shade, and little stimulation.

"The soaring temperatures are difficult for a polar bear to deal with as they easily overheat."

The park rescued 13 lions from Romania in 2010, reports the BBC.

It has already begun work on 10-acre enclosure for Yupi, complete with an Arctic Tundra landscape.

Polar bears are increasingly threatened in their native habitat.
