Bus hit by train in Nairobi: 11 dead



A passenger train has crashed into a bus in and a car in Nairobi, Kenya, killing at least 11 people and injuring at least 34.

Speaking to the BBC, Nairobi police chief Benson Kibui said the bus appeared to have crossed the railway line as the train approached at high speed.

The 33-seater bus also hit a car during the morning rush hour accident, injuring the occupants, Kenya's Daily Nation newspaper reports.

The emergency services took the wounded to three different hospitals in the city. According to witnesses, the train driver survived the crash, and went to the nearby God's Last Appeal Church where he knelt down to pray.

The driver of the bus is now in police custody.

Accidents in Kenya are often caused by of a lack of safety measures on roads and rail crossings, according to the BBC.

Kenya's Red Cross said at least 11 people died, three of them at the scene of the accident.
