Video: Surfer tackles 'biggest wave ever ridden' after storm in Portugal
A Brazilian surfer may have set the world record for the biggest wave ever ridden after riding an estimated 100ft wave off the coast of Portugal.
Caros Burle conquered the giant wave that was whipped up by the St Jude storm at Praia de Norte, near the fishing village of Nazare.
It is thought Burle could have beaten the current surfing Guinness World Record held by Garret McNamara from Hawaii who tackled a 78ft wave at the very same spot in Nazare on 1 November 2011.
Mr Burle tackled the wave with fellow Brazilian surfer Maya Gabeira, who was knocked unconscious and nearly drowned during her attempt.
She was dragged onto the shore before being taken to hospital, where she was treated for a broken ankle.
According to the Daily Telegraph, Mr Burle told Surfer Today: "At one stage there was a bit of shouting and screaming. Everyone was so excited you know, and I was just shouting back at them, telling them that it's just another big day, that everyone had to stay focused.
"It was luck. We never know when we will be catching the wave. I still hadn't surfed any wave and everyone had already had their rides. Maya almost died."
A British father-of-two, Andrew Cotton, 34, from North Devon, also took on a giant wave, but was not thought to be as big as Mr Burle's effort.
According to the Daily Mail, Mr Cotton was driving the jet ski that took his surfing partner Garret McNamara into the record-holding wave back in 2011.
