A man who pushed an elderly passenger off a bus causing him to hit his head on the pavement has been jailed.

Derek Thomson, 27, pushed retired Royal Navy seaman Frederick Fenn, 67, off a bus in Defoe Road, Ipswich, which left him in a critical condition.

According to the BBC, Thomson was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm and was jailed for three years.

He has been ordered to pay £120 to the victim.

The Ipswich Star reports that in a statement read to Ipswich Crown Court, bus driver Jonathan Bethell said: "He pushed him backwards out of the open door of the bus."

Thomson claimed that Fenn tapped him on the shoulder and swore at him as he was getting off the bus.

Mr Fenn was described as "confident" and "active" but since the attack has appeared to relatives as "removed from reality", the Daily Mail reports.
