A British couple have died after being knocked down while trying to cross a five-lane freeway on holiday in West Virginia, America.

Edward McElroy, 76, and his wife Brenda, 70, were trying to get to a restaurant that hotel staff recommended for dinner when they were killed.

According to the Daily Telegraph, they were hit by a pick-up truck and died instantly.

The Daily Mail reports that the couple, from Blackpool, had only arrived in America 24 hours before.

They leave behind three children and three children.

Brenda's sister Eileen Dobson, 65, told the Daily Mail: "We're all devastated and so sad especially after we saw them only last week.

"They were so excited and were telling us about the trip. I asked if they were looking forward to it and they said they couldn't wait. It's heart-breaking - they were so full of life."

West Virginia is popular with tourists during autumn for its leaf peeping season when the trees display spectacular colours across the state.
